After seeing her boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, perform his duties as an assistant basketball coach for Butler, Caitlin Clark assumed the role of a supportive girlfriend on Saturday night.
After her record-breaking debut season in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) came to a close in September, Clark, who was recently honored with the title of TIME Athlete of the Year for 2024, now has some spare time on her hands. This means that she was able to attend the Butler Bulldogs game in Indianapolis.
McCaffery’s Bulldogs were defeated by UConn by a score of 79-74 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. This resulted in the Bulldogs finishing the season with a record of 7-6 overall and 0-2 in Big East play. The No. 1 draft pick was seen in the stands during the game. As Clark was filmed by NBC cameras at the game, it appeared as though she was using her phone. This led to comments on social media that she was checking the score of the Kansas City Chiefs game against the Houston Texans.
In light of the fact that she has been a Chiefs fan for a very long time, she would have been pleased with that outcome. Kansas City prevailed with a score of 27-19, and Taylor Swift was present at Arrowhead Stadium to see the game. Clark was also present at Butler’s game versus Merrimack College, which took place a month ago. Fans reported that she appeared bored when conversing with other individuals and continuously checking her phone rather than watching the action on the field.
McCaffery, who has been in a relationship with Clark for almost two years, became a member of Butler’s staff in September. Prior to that, he had been employed by the Indiana Pacers as a basketball development coordinator. At the end of November, Caitlin and Connor were observed attending a Pacers game together. They were seated courtside with the girlfriend of Tyrese Haliburton, a key player for the Indiana Pacers, as the Pacers were playing the New Orleans Pelicans.
This winter, Clark will have more time to herself as a result of her decision to not participate in Unrivaled, a new women’s basketball league that features three-on-three teams. Despite the fact that Napheesa Collier, Angel Reese, and Breanna Stewart are among the WNBA stars who are scheduled to participate, the standout player for the Fever decided to not participate in the game. The rosters were revealed in November.
Clark provoked outrage in her interview with TIME last week after being named the magazine’s Athlete of the Year.
The 22-year-old discussed her own ‘white privilege’ while stating the WNBA had ‘been created around’ black players, which has sparked outrage in certain quarters.
Commentator and podcaster Megyn Kelly decried her’self-flagellation’, while Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy – one of the WNBA player’s biggest supporters – expressed his displeasure after dismissing any suggestion that she is receiving special attention because of her race.
Others, including retired women’s soccer player Megan Rapinoe, have expressed support for Clark following her ‘white privilege’ statement.
‘I believe what Caitlin did in her remarks or in the piece was talk plainly about her White privilege, which is why she is receiving so much criticism or blowback, and that is the lesson,’ Rapinoe added.
‘So, you know, for conservative media going at her now that clearly they’re just flashing their whole a**
‘If fans are offended because she said that and just acknowledged what is true, I believe it says a lot. But I believe that the more you speak directly to it, the clearer it becomes what your position is, and you cannot be manipulated in that way. It doesn’t really leave your thoughts or posture as a white player open for interpretation.
