Travis Kelce has yet to score a touchdown this season, but another NFL tight end reached the end zone on a play named after Taylor Swift.
Ben Sinnott hadn’t recorded an NFL catch in his first six games before finally making his mark last Sunday. In the third quarter of a blowout win over the Carolina Panthers, Marcus Mariota found the Washington Commanders rookie for a three-yard touchdown.
On Thursday, Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury revealed that Sinnott scored on a play called “Taylor Swift.” And no, there doesn’t appear to be any complicated message or hidden meaning behind the name.
Per The Athletic’s Ben Standig, Kingsbury said other plays are named after pop stars, and he finally dialed up the “Taylor Swift” after instituting it three weeks ago.
There’s no apparent connection between Sinnott and Swift. However, some conspiracy theorists may note that Sinnott is 22 years old and caught two passes on two targets in Week 7. Unless they meet in the Super Bowl, the Commanders won’t get a chance to deploy the Swift play against the Kansas City Chiefs.
That possibility isn’t nearly as crazy as it would have seemed months ago. Washington has already exceeded last season’s win total (four) with a 5-2 start.
The Commanders have scored an NFL-leading 31.1 points per game behind rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, who has completed 75.6 percent of his passes with a 107.0 quarterback rating.
Swift had yet to release her first album when Washington last won a playoff game in January 2006. Perhaps the Commanders will dial up another pop star’s play when they face the Chicago Bears this Sunday.
