Ryan Murphy Confirms What All Swifties Have Been Dying To Know About Travis Kelce And Taylor Swift

Why Taylor Swift Will Not at Travis Kelce’s Chiefs Game Against the 49ers

The showrunner commented on a widely held Swiftie idea regarding one of Kelce’s initial moments on the FX series.

Not long after making his television debut in Grotesquerie’s third episode, Travis Kelce drove off in a getaway car alongside Niecy Nash-Betts. Swifties were, of course, promptly alerted.

The scene, which aired on October 2, had Ed Lachlan, played by Kelce, helping Lois Tryon (played by Nash-Betts) escape the hospital after she smashed her car while intoxicated. In a scene straight out of a dream sequence, the couple left the hospital holding hands, got into a red convertible, and drove off.

The Hollywood Reporter was informed by Ryan Murphy, the showrunner, that the moment is “a little Taylor Swift nod” since the characters got “into the red getaway car.” Ryan Murphy also designed the role specifically for Kelce.

Naturally, “Getaway Car,” a song off Swift’s 2017 album Reputation, is the subject of the allusion.

Fans were quick to notice on social media after the episode’s broadcast earlier this month that there appeared to be a reference to the Swift song.

A video of the scene was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a fan page for the 35-year-old tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs. Several comments noted that Kelce was having his own getaway vehicle moment on film.

Another fan pointed out the possible connection on TikTok, writing over a clip from the episode, “Does this look familiar Swifties?! 😍😍.”

“This can’t be a coincidence!” the fan wrote in the post’s caption.

The world of the FX series has collapsed since Kelce’s introduction as Ed Lachlan. It was disclosed in the episode airing on October 16 that Lois (Nash-Betts) had, in fact, been unconscious the entire time and that the ruthless killer she had been pursuing was only a hallucination in her mind.

Murphy told THR that initially, Kelce and Nash-Betts “drive off to this black limbic space, which makes absolutely no sense.” The revelation also provides some background for the escape car scene. However, now that you are aware that [Lois] is unconscious, it does make sense.”

The individuals that fans have grown to know from Lois’ dreamlike state are all different from who they were initially thought to be, which adds another element to the revelation.

Marshal (Courtney B. Vance), her spouse, is still living; Merritt (Raven Goodwin), her daughter, is a physician searching for a cancer treatment and is wed to a destitute and unkempt Ed (Kelce). Additionally, Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond) and Father Charlie (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) are not who they seem to be.

In reality, Megan is a police investigator who works with Lois, and Charlie is her doctor at the hospital.

Murphy said to THR that it was “fun” to experiment with each character’s dualism.

“It was kind of a fascinating thing to work with all of these actors on that. I think it’s the reason why actors like playing twins, because they can do two things. They all couldn’t wait to play the second character,” he said of the shift after episode 7’s big reveal. “Because they were either very different, or the circumstances were the same but they were still very different.”
